Women only courses in film directing

Only 6% of film directors are women, according to the Birds Eye View Film Festival. This staggering statistic is a frightening one for female directors currently trying to break through to the industry. It would seem whatever help is out there for women is either not working or not working quickly enough.

Can it be true that – as Jane Campion said at this years Cannes Film Festival - women are just not ‘tough enough’ to direct movies? In which case how do we toughen up?

One thing is for sure; if we keep doing what we’ve always done, we’ll keep getting the same results.

Less than 6%?! This statistic is TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE!!

The  first aim of filmdirecting4women is to teach directing skills to women in an enjoyable, jargon free way which will quickly build confidence. From the introductory course to more specialist courses for those who already have some experience, students will benefit from hands on experience in small, women only classes which will provide a 100% supportive and encouraging environment.

Our second aim is to hold a film festival in September 2010 which has 100% of films by female directors.

Finally we aim to introduce a low cost equipment hire plan that students may benefit from.
